Ingredient check
The NOVA processing group and Nutri-Score, plus every ingredient sorted into clean, watch, or avoid, with a reason for anything flagged.
How the ingredient check works
What's behind each rating
It isn't a certified nutrition rating or medical advice. It's built on structured food data, in this order:
PrimaryOpen Food Facts
FallbackUSDA FoodData Central
1The barcode is looked up in Open Food Facts, a free, open food database that returns the NOVA processing group (1–4), the Nutri-Score (A–E, the front-of-pack grade used in the EU), and the additive E-codes detected in the product. Only when it has no match does the app fall back to USDA FoodData Central's ingredient text and a simpler keyword check.
2Each detected additive is checked against a curated table of about 25 E-codes with documented regulatory action or research concern, such as nitrites, synthetic dyes, BHA/BHT and artificial sweeteners. Common additives like citric acid or lecithin stay unflagged. NOVA 4 ("ultra-processed"), a Nutri-Score of D or E, and high sugar, salt or fat are called out too.
Clean · no flag raised
Watch · worth moderating
Avoid · flagged by research or regulators
⚠️
"Clean" means no red flag was raised, not a certified endorsement. NOVA and Nutri-Score come from real data, but which additives count as "watch" or "avoid" is a curated list, not a nutritionist's review, and it isn't tailored to any allergy or health condition. Treat it as a quick heads-up and check the label.
